Feeding Birds

FEEDING BIRDS :)

Mr Ted is a curious bear and has some questions.
What happens if you leave different foods out for birds?
Do birds prefer certain foods?
Do all birds eat the same things?

Hmmm.... Let's help him out.

Step 1.
Find 3 different things birds might like to eat.
Chopped apple, bread, muesli, pumpkin seeds, buckwheat, etc.
I'm using apple, buckwheat, and bread.

Step 2.
Place each food in its own small pile.
Make sure you can see each pile, and that each pile is in a good spot for the birds.
Each pile is about 1 metre from the others.
Step 3.
Get someone to distract your cat.

Step 4.
Watch, observe.
Which food do the birds eat first?
What sorts of birds come? Can you name them?

Other things you could do.
Set food out early in the morning, at lunchtime, late afternoon. Do birds feed differently at different times of day.

Put food out "somewhere else". Is there a spot in your garden that birds prefer, or avoid?

Keep a list of the birds you see. When we're back at school, we can compare.
